The Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Bothered by your droopy or puffy eyelids? Whether the changes are caused by aging or you've always had eyelid issues, eyelid surgery can renew your appearance. If you're considering this surgery, these eight benefits may convince you to give your ophthalmologist a call:

Rejuvenated Appearance

Your skin loses some of its elasticity as you age, causing droopy lids and wrinkles around the eyes. At the same time, fat collects around the eyes, making your eyelids look puffy. Although you may feel well-rested and happy, saggy, puffy eyelids may make you look tired, sad, or angry. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, removes extra skin and fat to give the eyelids a smoother, tighter, younger look.

A Confidence Booster

It's not easy to feel confident when you're self-conscious about your eyelids. If you run from cameras or avoid mirrors because you don't like what you see, surgery may be an excellent option for you. Eyelid surgery offers an excellent way to enhance your appearance and improve your self-esteem.

Better Vision

Droopy upper eyelids can interfere with your vision if sagging is severe. As the sagging worsens, your eyelids may begin to cover the outer edges of your eyes. When this happens, you may notice a decrease in your peripheral (side) vision. Sagging may also reduce your total field of vision if the droopy lids begin to cover the tops of your eyes. Both of these issues can affect your ability to read, see obstructions in your path when you walk, or drive safely.

Eyelid surgery removes excess skin, eliminating restricted vision. Although cosmetic eyelid surgery isn't covered by health insurance, surgery to restore unrestricted vision might be fully or partially covered by your health insurance plan.

Improved Comfort

The weight of your heavy upper eyelids may cause discomfort and eye fatigue. Removing the extra skin during eyelid surgery can result in a significant improvement in fatigue and discomfort.

Eyelid surgery may also be recommended if you have ectropion or entropion. Ectropion occurs when the lower eyelid turns outward. Entropion happens when the lower eyelid turns inward. Ectropion can cause dry or watery eyes and sensitivity to light, while entropion could lead to corneal infections, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Eyelid surgery returns the eyelid to the normal position, eliminating irritation and other symptoms.

No More Under-Eye Bags

Your under-eye area begins to look puffy and wrinkled as fat collects under the eyes. Eyelid surgery tackles under-eye bags by repositioning fat, removing excess skin, and tightening muscles around the eye. The surgery can also improve the appearance of hollows under the eyes that make the under-eye area look dark.

A Simpler Makeup Routine

Online makeup gurus offer plenty of tips to disguise saggy or hooded eyes with makeup. Unfortunately, the same techniques that make influencers look amazing may make you look as if you smeared ink around your eyes. When you choose eyelid surgery, you'll be able to forget about complicated eye makeup routines.

Minimal Scars

Are you worried that your surgery will be noticeable? Although people will certainly notice you look younger and well-rested, they won't be able to see your scars. Your ophthalmologist hides incisions in the folds of your eyes to keep them out of sight.

Long-Lasting Results

The results of upper eyelid surgery can improve your appearance for 5 to 7 years, but could last your entire life, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The Clinic notes that lower eyelid surgery usually only needs to be performed once.
